1. The GEDIS® AI catheter should be stored in a semen
cooler prior to us.
2. Twice daily the GEDIS® catheters should be rotated and tapped firmly to insure semen is properly suspended
to prolong longevity.
3. Rotate and tap the GEDIS® AI catheter to insure that the semen has been properly suspended.
4. Grip the catheter by the Blue hub.
5. Starting at the end of the catheter by the “red” tip, locate the small notch cut into the end of the
outer bag.
6. Beginning at the notch, carefully peel the sanitary bag the length of the catheter. Note : Leave the
bottom of the sanitary bag attached to the catheter. Avoid contaminating the catheter with dust or feces.
7. Break the “red” tip off of the end of the catheter. This exposes the temperature sensitive “gel” plug
that controls the insemination process.
8. Apply a small amount of non-spermicidal lubricating jelly to the side of the tip.
9. Begin by inserting the catheter at a slightly upward angle.
10. Once you have inserted the catheter 4-6 inches, attach the white extension into the blue hub.
11. Continue inserting by pushing forward - slow and steady. Note : As the catheter is inserted during
insemination, the flanges on the tip of the catheter will fold back so you may not feel the prominent “thump, thump, thump”
as the tip passes through the cervical rings like you normally would with a harder foam tip catheter or spiral tip catheter.
You do not need to rotate the catheter during insertion. It is normal for the blue hub to be inserted 3-4 inches inside
of the vulva during the initial insertion process.
12. Continue inserting the catheter until you feel firm, solidresistance from the cervix.
13. Once inserted, rotate the catheter ½ turn to the right and pull back slightly. This will insure the
tip has straightened out and sealed the cervix.
14. Once you have the catheter inserted, it is necessary to remove the extension handle by turning the
handle ¼ turn to the left and pulling it straight out.
15. You should now have the GEDIS® catheter inserted properly. Note : If during insemination you notice
significant semen flush back or back wash from the vulva, the catheter is has not been inserted properly and is not locked
into the cervix. After insertion, the female will relax and the catheter will move back to normal location from being pushed
forward during insertion. In larger sows, the catheter “hub” will be flush with the vulva. For gilts, the catheter “hub”
should stick out about 2-3 inches.
16. As the sow’s body temperature warms the dose of semen, she is also warming the temperature sensitive
“gel” plug. Once the catheter reaches 100 degrees, the “gel” plug will dissolve and the insemination process begins. In
most sows, this will take approximately 2-3 minutes. When the insemination has completed the catheter membrane will have
shrunk back to the catheters original shape and the balloon will be empty.
17. Most farms will leave the catheter in the sow for 10-15 minutes after insemination before removing.
This allows the sow’s body the time needed to “pull” the semen forward into her reproductive tract.
